McMullin Named NESCAC Field Hockey Player of the Week

October 28, 2002

AMHERST, MA Amherst College first-year goaltender Anne McMullin (St. Louis, MO) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Field Hockey Player of the Week on Monday after combining for nine saves in a pair of crucial 1-0 shutout wins over visiting conference rivals Connecticut College and Williams. The two victories kept the Jeffs (6-7/3-5) in the running for a NESCAC playoff berth and moved them into a tie with Tufts University (3-9/3-5) for seventh place in the league standings.

McMullin, who's currently seventh in the NESCAC and first among conference freshmen in goals against average (1.37), tallied three saves in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Conn. Amherst won the game with a goal by sophomore Erin Leydon (Bridgeton, ME) in the 62nd minute.

Saturday's overtime win over Williams was a sizeable upset. McMullin tallied six saves against the nationally-ranked Ephs, who entered the game with just one loss on the season.

McMullin has played in eight games this season with 46 saves and three shutouts to her credit.

The Jeffs wrap up regular season play Saturday at 11 a.m. at conference rival Trinity College (3-10/2-6), with the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament set to kick off Sunday at 1 p.m.. The top seed will have a first-round bye and will hosted the semifinals and finals on November 9-10. Teams seeded No. 2, 3 and 4 will host first round games this Sunday at 1 p.m.
