Leydon's Game-Winner Lifts Jeffs Over Conn., 1-0

October 23, 2002

AMHERST, MA With just under nine minutes left in regulation, sophomore Erin Leydon (Bridgeton, ME) took a crossing pass from junior Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) and slipped the game-winning goal past a stronghold of Connecticut College defenders, as the Amherst College field hockey team held off the visiting Camels 1-0 on Wednesday. With the win, Amherst moves to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in NESCAC play. Conn., meanwhile, drops to 1-11 with a 0-7 NESCAC record.

On a frigid afternoon, Amherst used an overpowering offense to full advantage. A slew of Amherst attackers got their chances on goal senior Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) and Ryan each registered two shots on the afternoon, and sophomores Lauren Anderson (Far Hills, NJ) and Tyler Kelly (Bronxville, NY), along with senior power Jenna Obelsky (Stoughton, MA) each notched a shot as well. Amherst's 15 penalty corners also kept the momentum heading its way. Conn. first-year goalkeeper Kate Reardon (Newton, MA) had a solid performance with three saves.

The Camels had to make due with four penalty corners and six shots on goal including two each from junior Emily Huffman (Oklahoma City, OK) and senior Christy Bassett (Nantucket, MA). Amherst rookie goaltender Anne McMullin (St. Louis, MO) was a stronghold between the pipes, marking a trio of saves to keep the Jeffs' side of the scoreboard spotless.

With the regular season schedule winding down, the Jeffs look toward Saturday's home matchup against Williams College, scheduled for an 11 a.m. start. Amherst will then travel to Trinity College on Nov. 2, before the NESCAC Championship Tournament kicks off on Nov. 3.
