Amherst Volleyball Coaching Staff

Sue Everden

Entering her 13th season, head coach Sue Everden has molded the Amherst volleyball program into one of the finest in the nation, guiding the team to a 333-151 overall record entering the 2001 season, 12 postseason appearances, three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths and back-to-back NESCAC Championships, twice earning NESCAC and New England Region Coach of the Year honors along the way. After graduating from Slippery Rock University, Everden completed her master's degree at Springfield College and spent the next 23 years coaching a variety of sports at several colleges, including Clarkson University, the United States Coast Guard Academy and her ongoing tenure at Amherst. In addition to her duties on the volleyball court, she has guided the Amherst softball team to a trio of consecutive postseason appearances and has twice been named NESCAC Coach of the Year in just three seasons as head coach. Everden also serves as the assistant athletic director for the college.

E.J. MillsAsst. Coach Gary VanCauwenberge, when asked why he chooses to coach, replied, "I think everyone has an activity or two that gives them their greatest enjoyment." He continued, "It's a time when they are so immersed in the experience that they no longer feel in control of themself, but rather the self is in control of them. There is a sense of fulfillment in watching an athlete perform in this zone." A native of Richfield Springs, NY, VanCauwenberge was a member of both the varsity baseball and men's club volleyball teams at Ohio Wesleyan University. After graduating with degree in health and physical education with a concentration in teacher certification, VanCauwenberge enrolled in the exercise and sports studies graduate program at Smith College. He expects to complete the program in May of 2002. As part of his graduate education, VanCauwenberge took on the responsibilities of assistant coach for both the volleyball and softball programs at Amherst beginning last fall. Under his tutelage, the volleyball program turned heads in 2000, pounding its way to a 27-5 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
