November 7, 2001

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College volleyball senior co-captains Erica Hewes (Pebble Beach, CA) and Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA) were named all-league by the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Tuesday after leading the Jeffs to a 24-7 overall record and an 8-2 mark in the conference play. The Jeffs advanced to the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship Tournament, but fell to eventual champion Williams College.

A first-team selection for the third consecutive season, Hewes, an outside hitter, powered the Amherst attack averaging 4.33 kills and 0.82 on the season. DeMeules earned second-team honors after pacing the Jeffs with 627 assists and 343 digs. A three-time All-NESCAC selection, DeMeules is also a two-time NESCAC All-Academic honoree and twice earned conference Player of the Week honors during her junior season.

Together, Hewes and DeMeules will graduate as the winningest class in Amherst volleyball history with a 105-23 career record, including a pair of NESCAC championship crowns and three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths.

Wesleyan University's Alexis Keeler and Gale Lackey were named the NESCAC Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively. Lauren Fennessey of Bates was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year, while Williams' Joyia Chadwick earned NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors.
