Volleyball Downs Colby in Quarters, Falls to Williams in NESCAC Semifinals

November 3, 2001

MIDDLEBURY, VT - After a 3-0 win over Colby College in the NESCAC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday night, the third-seeded Amherst College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 2 seed Williams College in the semifinals Saturday at Middlebury College, finishing its season at 24-7, barring an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Senior outside hitter Erica Hewes (Pebble Beach, CA) paced the Jeffs with 23 kills and four blocks, while classmate and fellow co-captain Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA) added 32 assists in defeat.

Williams went on to win the tournament, posting a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Wesleyan University in the championship match, earning an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament.

Amherst, which entered the semifinals ranked fourth in New England, won the second game to even the match at 1-1 against Williams before the Ephs swept the remaining two games to advance to finals. Game scores were 30-21, 23-30, 30-20 and 30-19.

Amherst finished the regular season tied for second place in the NESCAC but settled for the No.3 seed by virtue of a 3-0 conference loss to Williams on September 15. Of the Jeffs' seven losses this season, three came against Williams, including Saturday's defeat in the NESCAC semifinals.

Meanwhile, DeMeules and Hewes will graduate as the winningest volleyball class in school history with a 105-23 overall record, including three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths and NESCAC Championships in each of the past two seasons.
