Junior Erin Dittus posted 22 kills in the Jeffs' 3-2 win at Smith
NORTHAMPTON, MA - It took five games, but the Amherst College volleyball team eventually outlasted non-league host Smith College, 30-17, 24-30, 30-23, 28-30 and 15-9 on Thursday night, improving to 23-4 on the season. First-year setter Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) led the way with 25 assists, six blocks and five kills, while senior co-captain setter Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA) chipped in with 22 assists and four kills.

Junior outside hitter Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) and senior co-captain Erica Hewes (Pebble Beach, CA) did the bulk of the scoring with 22 and 17 kills, respectively. Defensively, sophomore Natalie Brooks (Catonsville, MD) was dominant up front with a match-high six blocks, while classmate Lauren Wong (San Francisco, CA) added four blocks and four kills.

The Jeffs return to action this Saturday with Williams College and Wesleyan University visiting for the regular-season ending Little Three Tournament. Amherst will take on Wesleyan at 11 a.m. and Williams at 3 p.m. in a pair of non-conference matches at LeFrak Gymnasium.

With a 9-1 league record, Wesleyan has already locked up the top-seed in the upcoming NESCAC Championship Tournament, set for Friday and Saturday, November 2-3 at Middlebury College. Williams and Amherst are right behind with matching 8-2 league marks. Williams holds the upper hand in NESCAC Tournament seedings, however, by virtue of a 3-0 conference win over the Jeffs in Amherst on Sept. 15.

Saturday's matches will also be the final regular-season showings of DeMeules' and Hewes' long and illustrious four-year careers. The tandem will graduate with nearly every Amherst single-season and career statistical record, comprising the winningest class in school history with an astounding 104-20 overall record entering the weekend.
