October 20, 2001

NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team swept a pair of matches over Springfield and Bates Colleges to finish fifth overall at the Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament Saturday at Smith College.

Senior setter Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA) paced Amherst with 14 assists, nine kills and eight digs as the Jeffs came from behind to down Springfield, 3-1 (25-30, 30-28, 30-27, 30-24), in the opener. First-year Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) added 18 assists, nine digs and seven kills, while classmate Nicole Davidson (Los Angeles, CA) chipped in with eight kills and three blocks.

Amherst then breezed past Bates, 3-0 (30-27, 30-22, 32-30), in the nightcap. DeMeules led the way once again with 20 assists, five digs and four kills, while senior outside hitter Erica Hewes (Pebble Beach, CA) posted a match-high 11 kills.

The Jeffs' fifth-place finish came on the heels of a 3-2 loss to Wellesley College in first-round play on Friday night, after a 3-1 win over Brandeis University.

Amherst improved to 22-4 with the pair of wins, returning to action Thursday at 7 p.m. at Smith.
