May 21, 2002

SWEET BRIAR, VA Amherst College first-year Rachel Holt (New York, NY) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championships on Monday with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Trinity University's Lindsay Smith, but was eliminated in the second round later that afternoon by Erika Proko of Washington and Lee University, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Amherst senior co-captain Stephanie Fong (Los Altos, CA) also qualified for the singles draw but dropped her first-round pairing with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Becca Dutton, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 6-4 in what turned out to be the longest and most dramatic match of the tournament.

Fong later took to the doubles court with fellow senior co-captain Heather Cole (Pikesville, MD). The pair dropped its first-round match to the team of Browder and Nakamura from Washington College, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Singles and doubles play was preceded by the NCAA Division III Team Championships, which kicked off on Friday, May 17. The Jeffs fell just shy of reaching the national semifinals for the fifth consecutive season, falling to Emory University 6-3 in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Amherst, which won the college's first and only national championship in any sport in 1999, claimed three of the afternoon's singles matches but was swept in doubles play.
