Jeffs Set to Travel to Williamstown

April 30, 2002

HARTFORD, CT - Williams won seven of eight divisional games to finish first in the NESCAC West Division and earn the right to host the 2002 NESCAC Softball Championship tournament. The Ephs (7-1 division, 23-13 overall) will host the double elimination tournament Friday, May 3-Sunday, May 5.

The tournament will also feature defending conference champion Tufts (25-7 overall), which posted an 8-0 mark in the NESCAC East. Bowdoin (5-2, 24-8-1) and Amherst (6-2, 16-12) finished second in their respective divisions to earn a berth in this year's tournament. This year's championship features the same four teams that qualified for the inaugural NESCAC softball tournament last year.

Williams will face Bowdoin in the first game of the tournament on Friday. The teams did not meet in the regular season this year but faced one another twice in last year's tournament with Bowdoin advancing to the title game with a 9-3 win over the Ephs after falling 9-0 to Williams in the first round. Amherst will look to avenge a doubleheader loss to Tufts last week as they face the Jumbos in the second game on Friday.

The first day winners will play in Saturday's first game followed by an elimination game between the first day losers. The third game on Saturday will be an elimination game between the two teams who split their first two games. Sunday's championship will feature the survivor of the final game on Saturday and the tournament's undefeated team. A second game on Sunday will follow that game if the team who entered the day undefeated loses the first game.

The tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship tournament. Tufts, which advanced to the NCAA Division III College World Series in 2000, seeks its fifth consecutive trip to the national tournament. Amherst reached the NCAA Division III Regional final in 1998 and advanced to the national semifinals in 1999. Bowdoin and Williams are each seeking their first trip to the national tournament.
