Women's Cross Country Seventh at Division III National Championships

November 17, 2001

ROCK ISLAND, IL - The Amherst College women's cross country team finished seventh in its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship Meet, hosted by Augustana College at the Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, IL on Saturday. First-year phenom Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) and junior Martha Nelson (Bethesda, MD) turned in All-America performances, finishing consecutively in 18th and 19th place to lead the Jeffs, who improved on last year's 17th place finish at Whitworth College.

Just one second separated Hamill and Nelson - who each earned Second-Team All-Conference honors after leading Amherst to a third place finish at the NESCAC Championship Meet on October 27 - covering the five-kilometer course in 17:43 and 17:44, respectively. Amherst sophomore Aparna Nancherla (McLean, VA) was next in line, crossing the tape in 18:17, good for 42nd place. Rounding out the field, senior Emily Lobsenz (Fairfield, CT) finished 129th at 18:52, NESCAC All-Academic senior Becca Woo (Manchester, NH) placed 142nd with a time of 18:56, senior Diana Rancourt (Lunenberg, MA) finished 114th at 18:57 and senior co-captain Molly Burnett (Norwich, CT) capped her Amherst career with a 119th place, 19:10 showing.

NESCAC rival Middlebury College won the national championship with a 98 points, downing second place Williams College by 68 points. The University of Puget Sound's Dana Boyle took the individual crown with a time of 13:40, a full 26 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
