Wexler, Holt Earn ITA Awards

AMHERST, MA Amherst College women's tennis first-year Rachel Holt (New York, NY) and men's tennis senior Bryan Wexler (West Newbury, MA) were both honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) this week. Holt, who helped lead the Jeffs to their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals this spring, was named the ITA Northeast Region and National Rookie of the Year, while Wexler earned the ITA Northeast Region Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.

Holt had an outstanding rookie campaign as the Jeffs' No. 2 singles player and posted a 16-3 record this spring. After advancing to the Flight "A" singles semifinals at the NESCAC Championship Tournament, Holt qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships in Sweet Briar, Virginia, where she won her first-round match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, over Trinity University's Lindsay Smith, before falling in the second round to Erika Proko of Washington and Lee University, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Wexler anchored Amherst's men as its No. 1 singles player, posting impressive individual spring wins against Wesleyan University, Trinity College, Connecticut College and M.I.T. He also posted a first-round Flight "A" singles win at the NESCAC Championship Tournament, which was hosted by Amherst.

Long recognized as one of the best organized collegiate sports associations, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association is a non-profit service organization, which serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. Administering a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program, the goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching.
