Senior tri-captain Casey Ryan had a goal and an assist for the Jeffs in defeat
AMHERST, MA - Sophomore forward Matt Mancini (Westford, MA) headed in the game-winner in the 94th minute off a crossing pass from junior midfielder Jason Percy (Plymouth, MA), as the ninth ranked Wheaton College men's soccer team outlasted No. 21 Amherst College in overtime, 3-2, Monday afternoon on Hitchcock Field. Wheaton's deciding tally came after a controversial call in which Amherst sophomore forward Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) - with a clear path to the goal on a breakaway - was called offside, turning the ball over to the Crusaders.

Amherst jumped out to an early advantage 20 minutes into the game on a penalty kick by senior tri-captain Casey Ryan (Guilford, CT), and extended the lead to 2-0 when sophomore midfielder Andrew Korytoski (Northampton, MA) connected off a feed from Ryan at the 27:42-mark.

The 2-0 lead held until Wheaton junior forward David Wurm (Dunstable, MA) cut the deficit with a right-footed rocket into the upper right corner of the net, assisted by junior midfielder Justin Spiro (Little Silver, NJ), 3:36 before the break. Wheaton then knotted the score 9:10 into the second half when Percy - who assisted on the tying and game-winning tallies for the Crusaders - fed junior midfielder Shaun Cavanaugh (Botsford, CT) for a wide-open shot past Amherst senior goalie Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT), setting the stage for Mancini's overtime heroics.

The two-time defending NEWMAC champion Crusaders improved to a stellar 13-1 with the dramatic win, while Amherst fell to 5-3-2 with the loss in its fourth overtime game of the season. The Jeffs return to action Thursday night a 7:00 at non-league foe Keene State College.
