Johnson Leads Men's Soccer Past WNEC, 3-2

Sophomore Vivian Johnson notched his first two goals of the season in Amherst's 3-2 win over WNEC
AMHERST, MA - Sophomore midfielder Vivian Johnson (Kingston, Jamaica) scored his first two goals of the season, while classmate Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) added the game-winner, as the Amherst College men's soccer team outlasted non-league foe Western New England College, 3-2, on Thursday, snapping the visiting Golden Bears' seven-game winning streak.

Making his first start of the season, Johnson was all over the field in the first half, connecting 14:35 into the game on a give-and-go from fellow sophomore Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) - the Jeffs' leading scorer with seven points on the season. Johnson connected again at 26:43, trapping a left-footed pass from junior midfielder Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) and ripping a right-footed shot past WNEC freshman goalkeeper Jay Martyn (Poughkeepsie, NY) for a 2-0 Amherst lead.

Not to be outdone, WNEC freshman forward Jose Molina (Stamford, CT) cracked the scoring column just 2:40 later with a header off a free kick from fellow rookie Craig Carroll (Cobleskill, NY), just over the outstretched hands of Amherst senior goalie Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT).

The 2-1 Amherst lead stood until the 69th minute, when Cantwell took a corner kick from Johnson, deflected by senior tri-captain Adrian Talbott (Washington, DC), and blasted what turned out to be the game-winner into the top right corner of the net. Talbott was playing just his first game of the season after sitting out seven games with a sore achilles.

WNEC still had some fight left in the waning seconds, however, as freshman forward Daniel Bishop (Valley Stream, NY) found the back of the net from the top of the box, assisted by classmate Stefanos Parastatidis (Lanesboro, MA), with 13 ticks left on the clock to set the final score at 3-2.

The win improved Amherst's overall record to 5-1-2 on the season, while WNEC fell to 10-5. Playing without injured starters Ryan Goodband (Needham, MA), David Michener (Eden Prairie, MN) and Brad Coffey (Yarmouth, ME), the Jeffs took advantage of exceptional bench play from first-year Matthew Langione (Wellesley, MA), sophomore Valentin Burlacu (Bucharest, Romania), junior John Holodnak (Wellesley, MA) and senior Michael Sproul (Coral Gables, FL) down the stretch.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Williams College.
