Amherst Men's Soccer Ties Middlebury, 1-1

October 6, 2001

AMHERST, MA - For the third straight game, the Amherst College men's soccer team played into overtime, and for the second straight time, the result was a tie, as the Jeffs finished in a deadlock with Middlebury College, 1-1. Following Saturday's game, Amherst's record goes to 4-1-2 overall, and 3-1-2 in NESCAC action.

It looked like Amherst would get all the scoring it would need in the second half, thanks to sophomore midfielder Andrew Korytoski (Northampton, MA). After sophomore Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) deflected a ball away from the goal, Korytoski trapped it, then blasted a left-footed shot into the top-right side-netting to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead. However, eleven mintues later, Middlebury's Pat Saunders (Morristown, NJ) took a deflected pass and scored on a shot into the left-hand corner just past the outstretched dive of Amherst senior goalie Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT).

Both Amherst and Middlebury had numerous scoring chances the rest of the game, including a Tim Canon (Easthampton, MA) breakaway shot that just missed the net near the end of regulation. In the first overtime, both teams stepped up the intensity, trading scoring bids back and forth, including chances from Middlebury's Kyle Dezotell (Newport, VT) and Amherst's Roger Boulay (Norfolk, MA).

Orum made six saves in goal for the Jeffs, who lost three starters to injury in the game, while Middlebury's Brian Hamm (Terryville, CT) was spectacular while also making six saves.

Amherst returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. at non-league foe W.N.E.C.
