Amherst Men's Soccer Ties With Bowdoin, 0-0

September 29, 2001

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's soccer team played to a hard fought 0-0 draw with Bowdoin College at Hitchcock Field on Saturday. Despite out-shooting Bowdoin 15-3, Amherst's record dropped to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in NESCAC play.

The game remained scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods despite strong scoring chances from both sides. The first half featured even play before sophomore Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) had a strong shot on net, but Bowdoin goalie Travis Derr (Berlin, CT) made a good save. In the second period, Amherst sophomore forward Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) lofted a shot over Derr but the ball sailed two feet over the crossbar.

The overtime period featured intense play, including the best scoring chance of the day off an Amherst crossing pass which sophomore Tim Canon (Easthampton, MA) just missed putting in the net. For the game, Bowdoin's Derr made five saves, while Amherst senior goalie Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT) made one save. Bowdoin falls to 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in NESCAC play.

Amherst returns to action next Saturday at noon against visiting NESCAC opponent Middlebury College.
