Field Hockey Blanks Middlebury, 3-0, in NESCAC Semifinal

October 27, 2001

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The 10th ranked Amherst College field hockey team advanced to Sunday's NESCAC Tournament Championship game with a 3-0 win over top-seeded host Middlebury College in the conference semifinals on Saturday. The Jeffs will take on Williams College Sunday at noon in the NESCAC Championship game with an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA National Championship Tournament at stake.

Amherst opened the scoring when junior forward Jenna Obelsky (Stoughton, MA) scooped up a rebound and dished it off to senior tri-captain forward Marcy Busch (Scarsdale, NY), who tipped a shot past Middlebury goaltender Molly Fitzgerald midway through the first half. The Panthers nearly knotted the score shortly after the break when Missy Krempa unleashed a shot from point-blank range but was turned away by Amherst senior keeper Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE), who finished with four saves en route to her seventh shutout of the season.

The Jeffs increased the lead to 2-0 when junior Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) intercepted a pass off a free hit at midfield and found the back of the net from the top of the circle for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Amherst sophomore Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) then set the final score at 3-0 on a penalty corner with 6:39 left in regulation.

The Jeffs improved to 13-3 overall with the win, while Middlebury stands at 10-5 overall and will await word of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
