F-Hockey Advances to NESCAC Semis With 2-1 Win Over Colby

October 21, 2001

BRUNSWICK, ME - Amherst College field hockey seniors Robin Ackerman (Princeton, NJ) and Marcy Busch (Scarsdale, NY) each scored in the first half as the fourth-seeded Jeffs defeated fifth-seeded Colby College 2-1 in Sunday's NESCAC field hockey quarterfinals at Bowdoin College. Junior forward Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) assisted on both goals for Amherst, which avenged one of its three regular-season losses, a 1-0 Colby victory in both team's season-opener.

With the win, the Jeffs improved to 12-3, advancing to next weekend's conference semifinals, where they will face top-seeded host Middlebury College on Saturday morning. Second-seeded Bowdoin College and third-seeded Williams College will meet in Saturday's other semifinal at Middlebury, with the winners locking horns on Sunday for the conference championship.

The Jeffs opened the scoring when Ackerman put home a rebound off a missed shot by Ouimet with 30:52 remaining in the first half to give Amherst an early 1-0 edge. The White Mules bounced back behind strong goaltending from Carrie Torrisi, who made three diving stops within a five minute span before the break.

Colby was rewarded when Marcia Ingraham finished off a scramble in front of the net to knot the score at 1-1. Amherst regained the lead shortly before halftime when Ouimet played a beautiful cross through the crease to Busch, who tapped home what proved to be the game-winner with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

The White Mules had few chances to tie the game in the second half, as Amherst controlled the pace of play. Senior goalie Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) made four stops en route to the win, while Torrisi finished with 11 saves for the White Mules.
