Six Jeffs Earn NFHCA National Academic Honors
Robin Ackerman '02
Senior Robin Ackerman was one of six Jeffs to earn NFHCA academic honors

April 17, 2002

AMHERST, MA Six Amherst College field hockey seniors including tri-captain NFHCA All-America Mairin Brady (Bethesda, MD) tacked on NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad honors to an already impressive list of postseason accolades. Amherst tri-captains Anne Close (Limekiln, PA) and Marcy Busch (Scarsdale, NY), along with Robin Ackerman (Princeton, NJ), Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE), and Laurie Smith (Wilmington, DE) joined Brady to round out the Amherst contingent.

Busch, who earned NFHCA Regional All-America honors via a nine-goal, three-assist season that landed the Jeffs a spot in the NESCAC title game, joined Ackerman, who was good for five goals on the year, on the front line. Close was a force on defense, leading the team with two defensive saves over the 2001 campaign. Brady, who also earned spots on the All-NESCAC Team and the NFHCA Division III North/South Senior All-Star squad, posted one goal and six assists on the year from the midfield.

Defender Smith and goalie Sensing rounded out the selections from Amherst. Smith, who was also named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team and the All-NESCAC Team, helped lead the Jeffs' traditionally strong defense. Sensing, another All-NESCAC and North/South Senior All-Star selection, held her ground in the net, posting seven shutouts en route to a .854 save percentage and a 0.81 goals-against average on the year.

Amherst played to a 13-4 record overall, locking up a place in the NESCAC Tournament. The squad lost to Williams College in the conference tournament championship game, but not before earning an 11th-place ranking in the season-ending NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll.
