MANCHESTER, NH (Nov. 21)-- Senior Forward Mike Noone (Swampscott, MA) notched a hat trick while Gregg DiNardo (N. Reading, MA) and Paul Gozzo (Avon, CT) added single tallies to pace Amherst College to a 5-0 shutout opening night victory over Saint Anselm College in the ECAC East hockey action tonight at West Side Arena.
The Lord Jeffs (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC East) controlled the tempo throughout most of the contest, outshooting the younger Hawks 47-28 for the game and shutting down Saint Anselm's offense with a strong neutral zone defense.
Amherst led 1-0 after one period after Noone notched his first of the night set up by Darce Swaggert and Chris Orszulak 4:22 into the period and went ahead 2-0 in the second when Noone notched his second, a power play goal, rifling a ten foot shot past Hawks goaltender Chris Devin at the 9:37 mark. Buster Nelson and Orszulak assisted.
Despite a 31-18 advantage in shots after two period, the Lord Jeffs still led only 2-0 due solely to an incredible performance from Devin. The senior netminder was brilliant in the Hawks net, making 42 saves total on the night including over a dozen from within five feet of the net.
The Lord Jeffs finally pulled away in the third. Noone notched his third, deflecting home a Rob MacDonald shot from the point 8:11 into the period. DiNardo made it 4-0 five minutes later set up by Matt Rogers and Tim Kelly and Gozzo closed out the scoring with 5:25 to play, set up by Tim Quinn and Matt Drawz.
Amherst junior goaltender Chris Addesa notched 28 saves in the shutout win.
Saint Anselm continues its opening weekend at home Saturday when they host the Mass. College of Liberal Arts (formerly North Adams State) in an ECAC East game at West Side at 3: P.M. Amherst travels to New England College.
