AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Darce Swaggert (Wayzata, MN), a rookie defensemen for the Amherst College men's ice hockey team, was named the ECAC/Bauer Rookie of the Week for games through January 4, 1998. Swaggert has previously been recognized on the ECAC Honor Roll for notching a pair of goals in an 8-1 league win over Massachusetts College last month.
Swaggert tallied two goals and an assist in each of the Jeffs' two games this past weekend. Hosting the Western Mass Tourney, Amherst faced eventual champion Potsdam in the first round. The rookie ignited the Lord Jeff comeback after a 4-1 deficit with a goal in the first period, followed by an assist on the tally that would cut the Bear lead to one. Swaggert notched his second goal to bring the Jeffs within 4-5 midway through the second, and his defensive anticipation helped to push the match into overtime where the Jeffs fell 7-6.
Amherst rebounded the next day with its second shutout of the season, a 7-0 blanking of American International College for third place in the tournament. Swaggert scored one of his three power play goals of the season to open up a three-goal third period for the Jeffs. The Minnesota native is currently Amherst's third leading scorer with seven goals and five assists. The Jeffs are 6-3 for the season and tied for first place in the ECAC-East with a 4-1 league showing.
Men's ice hockey will next face Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut on Friday, followed by a trip to Holy Cross on the 10th.
