Amherst Rallies to Defeat Wesleyan, 74-68

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Pat Mulvey (Rye, NH) made seven free throws in the closing minutes of the game as Amherst held on to defeat Wesleyan 74-68 in LeFrak Gymnasium. Mulvey had been the victim of an intentional foul, the fifth of the game by Sean Huse (Uxbridge, MA), with 4:45 to play. That began a series of nine Cardinal fouls in the final five minutes that gave the Jeffs 10 points from the line.

The two teams had played evenly throughout the first half, battling through nine lead changes and three ties toward a 29-27 Amherst advantage at the break. Cardinal Matt Kingsley (Hamden, CT) sank a layin early in the second to give Wesleyan a lead that would grow to as much as seven before an Amherst comeback. Kingsley led all scorers with 23 for the night, including his 1,000th career point. He is only the second player in Wesleyan history to break the millenium mark and currently boasts 1,020 points.

Amherst's Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) hit five clutch jumpers to keep the Jeffs in the game, while superb defensive pressure by Brian Daoust (Dover, MA) held the Cardinals to just five points in the last five minutes.

Amherst improves to 9-0 as the 10th best team in the country. The Jeffs prepare for a battle of the unbeatens when they host fourth-ranked Williams, 8-0, on Saturday. Wesleyan, now 5-4 on the season, will next face Connecticut College on Wednesday. This marks the beginning of NESCAC play for both teams in the league's first season as a playing conference.
