AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Amherst College has been selected as the host site for the 1998 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis East Regional Championship, to be played this weekend from Saturday, May 9 to Sunday, May 10. The winner of the Regional will advance to the Final Four, to be played Saturday, May 16 to Sunday, May 17 at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
The weekend will feature the four best men's tennis teams in the East, led by undefeated Williams College with a 12-0 record. The Ephs begin the post-season as the No. 1 team in the nation, and Williams faces fourth-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology (12-5) in the first match on Saturday. Second-seeded Amherst (11-4) will face No. 3 Swarthmore (9-8) in the second match.
Williams boasts a 3-0 record against the field as the Ephs posted a 5-2 win over Swarthmore and a pair of 6-1 victories over both Amherst and MIT. Amherst edged out Swarthmore, 4-3, before downing MIT 6-1, and Swarthmore also notched a 6-1 win over MIT. Both MIT and Williams are making their this appearance in the NCAA Championships, while Amherst makes its fourth showing. Swarthmore ranks third among Division III schools with 13 appearances, including a pair of titles in 1985 and 1990.
All matches will be played on the lower courts at Amherst College, except in case of bad weather. The Club in Sunderland and the Bay Road Tennis Club at Hampshire College will be utilized in case of rain. Saturday matches will be played at 11:00am and 2:00pm, 12:30pm and 4:00pm if matches are moved indoors. The Regional Championship is scheduled for 11:00am on Sunday.
