BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Helped by the play of defenseman Leif Olsen (Kinnelon, N.J.) and goalie Will Casella (Sewickley, Pa.), the Bowdoin men's lacrosse team fought back from a 6-1 halftime deficit to beat Amherst, 9-7, in an ECAC tournament quarterfinal game. Casella made 10 of his 17 saves in the second half and Olsen was dominant in the defensive end of the field, helping the Polar Bears defeat the Lord Jeffs for the second time this year.
Amherst (9-7) took a 2-1 lead after one period and then exploded in the second period for four unanswered goals, capped off by a Matt Roy (Marblehead, Mass.) goal to give the Lord Jeffs a comfortable 6-1 edge at intermission. Ben Chaset (Concord, Mass.) muscled his way in front of the Amherst goal and scored to open up the second half and spark a 5-1 run to end the third frame. Brian O'Callahan (Chester, N.J.) scored his second straight goal with 1:53 left in the third to bring the Polar bears within one goal at 7-6.
Chaset scored his second goal of the game 3:10 into the fourth to tie the affair before John Harden (Nantucket, Mass.) threaded a gorgeous pass to Josh Reitzas (Boston, Mass.) for the game-winner with 10:38 showing on the clock. Casella then went to work, stopping two one-on-one situations cold before getting a little help from the pipe late in the game. Stewart Strawbridge (Cochranville, Pa.) made a superb move at the top of the box and beat Amherst goalie Corey Simonson (Brookline, Mass.) low for the 9-7 final.
Simonson made nine saves in the losing effort and Todd Nichols (Skaneateles, N.Y.) led the Lord Jeff attack with a pair of goals while Payson Bullard (Wilton, Conn.) added a goal and an assist.
