AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Tufts running back Jon Routhier rushed for 124 yards on 26 carries and caught a 35 yard scoring strike from quarterback Dan Morse as the Jumbos ran away with the win at Pratt Field. Amherst quarterback Peter Honig (Bronxville, NY) tossed 15 completions in 24 attempts for 170 yards but was picked off twice by the Jumbos defense.
Amherst tied the score at 16 late in the fourth quarter before Morse led the Jumbos to two crucial scores in the game's waning minutes. The Jeffs were down 16-2 late in the third before Honig and the offense came to life. On the first series after the Jumbo score that brought the Tufts lead to 14 points, Amherst went on a ten play drive that spanned 69 yards, ending in a 17 yard scoring strike from Honig to senior tailback Darin Byrne (Winchester, MA). The Jeffs and the Jumbos traded possessions before the Amherst offense took control once again. This time on a seven play drive that traveled 56 yards, Honig jaunted up the middle on a quarterback keeper for a 17 yard scoring run. With the kick from Liam Fleming (Braintree, MA), the score was knotted at 16 -- a brand new game was born.
Jumbo quarterback Dan Morse showed the crowd at Pratt Field why he is considered the most prolific offensive player in Tufts football history. Two weeks ago, Morse set the all-time Tufts record for yards from scrimmage and during crunch-time Saturday, Morse grabbed the spotlight away from young Honig and the charging Amherst squad. Morse led the Jumbo offense to two critical touchdown drives that stole the wind from the Amherst sails-- the momentum shifted back in favor of the brown and blue and Tufts ran away with the 30-16 victory.
The win brings the Tufts record to 5-1 and the loss drops the Lord Jeffs to 4-2.
