AMHERST, Massachusetts -- On a day when points weren't flying onto the scoreboard, the Lord Jeffs defense accepted the challenge and rose to the occasion. Since losing their defensive leader, Alex Tracy (North Easton, MA), to a season ending injury two weeks ago, the Amherst defense has played with pure inspiration. Down 3-0 entering the fourth quarter, the squad knew they had to keep the White Mules out of the endzone-- they not only accomplished that, but registered two key fourth quarter interceptions to stifle the Colby offense in its tracks.
After deciding to switch quarterbacks in the third quarter and after giving sophomore Jason Campbell (Natick, MA) a series, Amherst finally handed the reigns over to another sophomore, Peter Honig (Bronxville, NY). Honig proved on his very first series that he was a playmaker and solid field general. The nifty Honig scrambled around the pocket and made several key conversions to keep the Amherst offense on the field in the second half. The biggest throw of the game, however, wasn't even from the hands of a quarterback. Down 3-0 and facing a third and six from the Colby 32 yard line late in the fourth quarter, Offensive Coordinator Don Faulstick pulled a play from his bag of tricks. Honig took the snap and pitched it off to tailback Darin Byrne who faked the run and stopped in his tracks and tossed a 32 yard scoring strike to receiver Matt Hall (Lincroft, NJ). The defense bit on the fake and Hall was wide open on the right sideline. That play shifted the momentum and the defense took care of business from there.
With the win, Amherst runs its record to 3-1 on the season and take on Little III Rival Wesleyan next Saturday in Middletown. The loss drops Colby to 1-3 on the year.
