AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Jake Conca (Attleboro, MA) was named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Hamilton College on Saturday, September 20. This is the first week of polling for the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
Conca led the game with 10 tackles (7 solo) and was a constant menace to the Continental offense. The outside linebacker contributed to an Amherst defense that held Hamilton to 104 total yards of offense, a league low for the first week of action. Last year, Amherst was ranked the fifth best defense in all of Division III and tops in Scoring Defense, holding opponents to 8.4 points per game.
Conca, a Political Science major, is one of 19 seniors on the 1997 Amherst football team. Coming off a 7-1 year in 1996, the Jeffs are currently 1-0 in 1997 after a 38-0 shutout of Hamilton in Clinton, New York. A tenacious defense and aggressive special teams play set up three of six Amherst scores with two interceptions and a blocked punt. The Jeffs will face 0-1 Bowdoin this Saturday, September 28 at 1:30pm on Pratt Field.
