Football Earns Pre-Season Honors

Colin Barnacle Named National Scholar-Athlete

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Three members of the Amherst College Football Team have earned pre-season honors, as bestowed by Dan & Peggy's College Football Preview '97. Senior Co Captain Rich Willard (Johnstown, NY) and defensive tackle Devin Moriarty (Monson, MA) were both named Pre-Season All-Americans, while fellow senior Colin Barnacle (Denver, CO) was recognized as a National Scholar-Athlete as a punter.

Willard sparked the NESCAC-leading offense in 1996 with his play-calling at quarterback. As a junior, the 6'4 triggerman threw 107 completions in 178 attempts (60.1%) for 1,673 yards and 11 touchdowns, in addition to running four into the endzone himself. Averaging 209 yards per game in his second seaon as a starter, Willard earned All-NESCAC and All-ECAC honors. He was also named the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week for his career-high 349 yards and three TD passes in a 24-7 victory over Trinity. The English major has been named a co captain for the 1997 season.

Moriarty helped anchor a unit that won the national title for Scoring Defense in 1996. Allowing merely 67 points all season (8.4 ppg), the Amherst defense stifled opponents' running and passing games, holding teams to just 1,653 yards all season (206.62 per game, 5th best in Division III). The defensive tackle (6'2-245 lbs.) finished his junior season as the Jeffs' fifth leading tackler (54 hits) and second in sacks with six for 29 yards. or returns for this senior season as a two-year starter.

Barnacle was recognized as a National Scholar-Athlete as a punter. The Political Science major kicked 1,047 yards in 32 punts (32.7 avg) in 1996 with a long of 49 yards. Barnacle also spends time on the offense at wide receiver, catching two passes his junior season for 71 yards, including a 62-yard toss to goal by Willard.

These three seniors are among 21 on the 1997 Lord Jeffs, who look forward to another successful season. Returning 13 starters and 64 lettermen, Amherst football hopes to build upon its 7-1 campaign in 1996 and record its first undefeated season since 1984.
