AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Jake Conca (Attleboro, MA), a senior outside linebacker for the Amherst College football team, was named to the ECAC Honor Roll for the week ending October 18, 1997. This is the second time this season Conca has been recognized for his outstanding performance on the gridiron.
Conca led Amherst defensively with an interception, a fumble recovery, pass break up, forced fumble and three tackles as Amherst pushed its record to 5-0 for the season. Facing then-undefeated Wesleyan, the Jeffs held the Cardinals scoreless through the first half, largely due to Conca's interception in the endzone late in the second quarter. While Wesleyan cut the lead to a single touchdown with a pair of scores in the third, the Amherst defense shut down the Cardinals in their most prolific period, allowing no points in the fourth where they had outscored opponents 41-9 in the past. With the Jeffs leading 30-14 midway through the final stanza, Conca recovered a fumbled onsides kick as Amherst held Wesleyan to 16 yards of total offense with -13 on the ground in the fourth. The Political Science major is the team's second-leading tackler, registering 34 hits (14 solo) and three sacks in five games.
Amherst next travels to Tufts this Saturday to face the 1-4 Jumbos.
