Women's Soccer Advances to Final Four

With a late second half goal by Laura Kochansky '98, the Amherst women's soccer team advances to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the history of the program. This marks the third consecutive year the Jeffs have won a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last year they bettered their 1994 Sweet Sixteen finish by advancing to the Elite Eight before Richard Stockton defeated the Jeffs 4-2 in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 gridlock in overtime.

The Jeffs faced Bates in the Regional Finals this afternoon after the Bobcats had disposed of host Williams 2-0. Kochansky lofted a goal over Bates's keeper Suzie Arnold as just a portion of the 21 shots the Jeffs hammered at the Bobcats. Amherst keeper Sarah Fabian '98 made seven saves in her tenth shutout of the season.

Kochansky also assisted the equalizing goal in the Jeffs' Sweet Sixteen matchup with Richard Stockton yesterday. The Ospreys had taken a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play before Kochansky fed Katie Connelly '00 for the rookie's seventh goal of the season. Connelly's cross to Genevieve Furst '00 in the first overtime period sealed the victory.

The Final Four will be held on Saturday, November 16 here at Amherst. The winners of those two games will advance to the National Championship game, scheduled for the following day.
