Amherst Baseball Assistant Coaches

Brian Hamm enters his second season as assistant coach for the Lord Jeffs.  Before coming to Amherst, Hamm had been the assistant coach at NESCAC rival Middlebury College for three seasons. A 2002 graduate of Middlebury, Hamm was a two-sport captain in baseball and soccer, earning both all-conference honors and all-region honors twice in soccer. Hamm played semi-professionally for the Downton Football Club in Downton, England before coaching at Middlebury and serving as Director of Goalkeeping for the Vermont Olympic Development Program. During the past two summers Hamm has been an Envoy Coach for Major League Baseball International (MLBI) and has coached junior national team players and professional teams in England and Germany.  He is currently working toward a master's degree in sport management at UMass Amherst.

Kelly Swiney brings six years of coaching experience at the collegiate level into his first season as an assistant coach at Amherst. A native of Stow, Ohio, Swiney majored in managerial economics at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, where he played baseball and received second-team All-NCAC honors for batting .368 with seven home runs, 17 doubles and 41 runs batted in during his senior campaign in 1999. He helped his team earn two NCAC Championships and three NCAA tournament appearances. After acting as an assistant coach at Kings College in 2001, Swiney assisted at Thiel College from 2002-04, leading the 2003 squad to the program’s first PAC Championship in 21 years after breaking the school record for wins in a season. Swiney remained in Pennsylvania to act as an assistant at Washington & Jefferson College from 2005-06, leading his team to an overall 66-28 (.702) record, including a school-record 34 wins in ’06. As the hitting coach, he raised the team’s batting average from .256 in ’04 to .328 in ’06, leading the team to its first national ranking in program history. Swiney is working toward a master’s degree in sports management at Ball State University.

Kevin Graber brings a wealth of experience to the Lord Jeff staff as both a player and coach. After twice earning first-team all-conference honors and captaining the College of Saint Rose to consecutive league titles and NCAA Division II Regional berths, Graber carved out a pro playing career that included stops in Australia, Arizona, Minnesota and Upstate New York. In his best season, Graber batted .311 for the Minnesota Stars of the Class A Prairie League and later managed the team to a 48-24 record, earning Prairie League Manager of the Year honors. Graber then managed the Adirondack Lumberjacks of the Class AA Northern League before moving onto a career in collegiate athletics administration. Along the way, Graber has held paying positions and volunteered his services at Lassen College (Susanville, CA), McLintock High School (Mesa, AZ), Riverland C.C. (Austin, MN), the Electric City Giants (Mountains Collegiate Baseball League), the Scotia Sox (Scotia, NY), the Schenectady Mohawks (New York Collegiate Baseball League) and the Pine Rivers Rapids (Queensland, Australia). Graber was recently inducted into the Schenectady (NY) Baseball Hall of Fame and is currently working toward a master's degree in education at UMass Amherst.
