Meet Recap:

Performer of the Meet - Steve Lucey & Zack Grand

The men kicked off the 2014 season by staying local, as they headed down the road to UMass for a Six-team Invitational. With the long season in front of them, and heavy into some great mileage and base work, coupled with a large group of first year runners the team opted to focus on development with the meet at the expense of true racing as we split the team into 4 groups that each had a specific plan to implement that would keep efforts controlled and ease the transition into the racing season. Working to our benefit as well was the fact that the course was a 6200m rather then typical 8k so it bridges the gap to the normal race distance which most will see in 2 weeks. The front group of Dan Crowley, KC Fussell, Jeff Seelaus, Mohamed Hussein, Kevin Connors and Craig Nelson stayed intact through to a little before the 5k, and then the first 4 would run through the line together, coming through in a very controlled 19:54 while Kevin and Craig came through in 20:15 and 20:18 respectively. The 2nd group of guys likewise keep mostly intact through to close to the 5k before guys started to separate a little bit with Romey Sklar at the front end of that group finishing in 20:17, with pack mates Brent Harrison in 20:28, Jesse Fajnzylber 20:32 and a pair of first years Justin Barry and Aaron Zambrano in 20:34 and 41 respectively. The 3rd group's plan was to run as a group through about the first 2.5 miles and then if feeling good, start to move from there and did they ever. After staying intact through to the "Hole in the Wall", Steve Lucey hammered the last Mile+ moving all the way up to 5th man with his 20:10 finish while first year peter Horton also had a great finish to come through in 20:27 while Ben Fiedler and Lucas Lebovitz - finally getting the chance to race at UMass in his final year! - ran 20:51 and 21:06. Aedan Roberts fought through an early fall cold and for an 800 runner, did a solid job with his 21:21. The final grouping for the race implored a similar plan to group 3, and likewise, they stuck to the plan through to the hole in the wall and then it was first year harrier Zack Grand who found is sea-level lungs (coming from Santa Fe) and blasted home in 20:51 while Sam Wohlforth and first year 800 ace Chris Butko came through separated by 2 seconds at 21:29 and 31. It was great to get the season kicked off, in the lower key approach helped ease the transition back to racing but the guys will be gearing up for a bigger race experience in a couple of weeks.
