Meet Recap: Runners of the Meet - Jesse Fajnzylber & Sam Wohlfurth

The boys headed to "Vacationland" also known as the great state of Maine, to race at the USM Invite, and more importantly, get the chance to have a good look at the course in which the NE Regional Championships will be held later this season. The course contained a good mix of athletic fields and a wooded section that was a mix of grass trails or wood-chip / dirt but there was only one small hill which was traversed 3 times would prove to be the only real impediment. Not surprisingly, the times - even this early in the season - were pretty fast, and should certainly bode well for some big PR's for those racing the course in November. Having gotten the rust off - for most of the guys - with last week's 6+k course, this weekend provided their first foray into the 8k, and they handled it great. An emphasis on working together was again very evident throughout the race, as pairings and in some cases, larger groups of guys worked great together to help each other. Dan Crowley and KC Fussell again took charge for the time, and put themselves into the lead pack and ran by each other for the whole race until a little separation in the final stretch saw Dan again take home the title of fastest Western MA guy on the team as he finished in a big XC PR of 25:46 and 9th place, whileFuss would finish and great race in 11th, also well under 26 minutes. Freshmen Raymond Meijer made his 8k very successful, running 26:19 for a 26th place with Alva Morales - imploring a little more of a sit back and move up hard approach in the race to his advantage, finished in 27th. Jeff Seelaus, battling a lingering cold all week, struggled a little bit in the last mile but still was able to dig deep to have a very solid race in 40th place with Gus Greenstein coming in shortly after. Ben Fiedler, despite a nagging leg injury that has limited running the last week or so was able to make his racing debut, and finished as 7th runner for the team to close out the scoring, coming through in 27:25 with 3 more Jeffs coming in within a few seconds as Charlie Reighard, and first years Kevin Connors & Jess Fajnzylber all running 5:30 pace. The cold that has gone through the team knocked Jesse back a few steps early in the week but did not seem to phase him especially as he passed a big group of guys in the final stretch. Romey Sklar and Lucas Lebovitz were the next pairing to cross the line - this race marking the first one in seemingly forever that Lucas has been able to complete - and then coming in shortly after them, with great races were first year Sam Wohlfurth who ran 28:41 for the race, and Cole Hawkins who worked with Sam throughout and was also under 29 minutes. Alex Durkee would close out the day for the team, running 29:50 to get everyone under 30 minutes. While MIT looked phenomenal at the front, running away with the title easily, the boys got 5th overall in a fairly tight battle with highly ranked NCAA teams Bates, Bowdoin and Tufts, and certainly a great momentum provider for the boys as we can continue with the season. The racing continues this coming weekend at Williams but will be more of a workout approach to the meet, with several guys running the 5k option of the meet, and those running the 8k will use the race as a hard effort workout with focus more on New England's a couple of weeks down the road.
