Meet Recap:

Runner of the Meet - Steven Lucey

The boys headed down to Conn. College, and their beautiful course at Harkness Memorial State Park, for the NESCAC Championships. The conditions on the course were ideal and despite being right on the ocean, there was relatively no wind at all to slow things down on the flat course. Coming into the race, 6 of the teams in the field were ranked in the Top 25 Nationally so not only were conditions ideal for fast racing but a loaded field would heighten the competition making things even more exciting. As is expected with a flat course, the opening mile was fairly quick but still a big group of about 30-35 runners were within a couple of seconds of each other as they hit the opening mile around 4:52 with Dan and Fuss sitting at the back of that pack. About 8-10 seconds back and in about 60th or so, the next wave of Amherst came through with Greg, Charlie, Raymond, Alva, Gus and Ben then a gap back to Romey, then Steve and Kevin coming through in about 5:15. While ideally looking to be a little further up at that point, we were still close enough to where we needed to be but things started to take a turn in the next mile as things started to string out - some picking the pace up, some maintaining the pace that had been set and unfortunately, the majority of our guys slid off the early pace through the 2mile. Hitting solid splits at the two mile mark was good but the difference between the 1st and 2nd mile splits were a bit too broad, and as seemed to back off those guys who didn't opened up some bigger gaps that would prove difficult to close later on. At 3m, Fuss and Dan were around 1515 in battling for Top 30 while Greg, Charlie and Alva came through relatively close around 15:25 and in about 45 in the race while Raymond and Gus were about 10 seconds back in 15:36. Coming in just under 16 minutes, Steve was moving up through the race best of all while Ben, Jeff and Romey were right with or very close to him, while Kevin came through in 16:08. Over the course of the final big loop of the race, Dan would work his way back into the top 25 with a big finishing kick to open up some space and running 25:35. Fuss had battled hard to move into the Top 25 but as the kicking got under way, he lost a little ground finishing 31st in 25:42. Charlie and Alva worked the last 2 mile together, and finished 2 places apart in 41st and 43rd while Greg would come home in 48th in 26:07. Raymond grabbed 60th, and it was Steven who had the best 2nd half of the race as he continued to move up through the race, making up a lot of ground throughout and coming all the way up to 7th on the team in a 26:31. Ben and Romey were separated by 4 spots as both ran under 27 minutes for the first time this season while Gus, Jeff and Kevin would all finish in the Top 100 of the race. As a team, we finished 7th - where we would have been "seeded" but short of where we were hoping to be and will look for a big last two races to get an effort worthy of the training that we have done this year.
