Performers of the Meet: Denzel Duncan '13, Dillon Buckley '13 and Sophie Galleher '10

Last Saturday, our story’s heroes made the short jaunt to the University of Massachusetts – Amherst to compete against our cross-town rivals and a host of other Division I teams.  In the field, the Amherst College weight team set the tone for the day, pushing the limits of their abilities and returning some of the day’s top performances.  Junior Chris Eaton began the competition by notching a personal record and DIII New England qualifying mark in the hammer throw at 45.37m.  He finished seventh.  Junior Pierce Kelley and first year Denzel Duncan demonstrated remarkable improvement in the discus, the former hurling a four-meter personal record at 33.13m and the latter surpassing his previous long mark by nearly five meters at 38.20m.  Kelley also marked a two-meter PR in the javelin to take eleventh with a 39.46m effort.  On the women’s side, sophomore Jordan Roehl placed seventh in the women’s shot with a collegiate best 11.59m throw.  In the jumping pits, junior Thebe Tsatsimpe sprang to a second place finish in the long jump at 6.83m and first year Jess Mueller bounded to sixth in the triple at 10.50.

On the oval, action began in the morning with the 10,000m run, in which 3 Lord Jeff first years showed superbly.  In the men’s competition, Andrew Erskine made the 25-lap turn in 32:50.01, good for eighth, while on the women’s side, Ali Simeone and Sarah Daly finished one-two, with Ali pulling away in a late race surge.  Next, first year Dillon Buckley debuted in the 3,000m steeplechase.  His weeks of preparation showed, as he clocked in at 9:49.32 for fifth place.  On the women’s side, senior Sophie Galleher made a dramatic return to the track following the completion of her thesis, clearing the barriers and the water pit in 11:20.45 to win the event.  First year Elodie Reed finished sixth.  In the 1500m run, junior Will Yochum led the charge for the Jeffs.  He finished second in 3:55.85, his 400m kick barely fended off by Albany’s Nicholas Santos.  Sophomore Geoff Ainslie continued his streak of impressive performances in the event with a 4:10.29, and senior Ben Klein ran his fastest time on the season as well.  In the longer sprints, the Jeffs made their mark with a pair of seventh place finishes: sophomore Andrew Reed for the men, and junior Susie Wasserman for the women.  The short sprints saw a couple of nice PRs in the 100m dash from two football crossovers.  First years Robert Johnson and Thomas Matthew crossed the line at 11.66 and 11.56 to finish thirteenth and ninth.  Sophomore Spencer Russell notched sixth in the high hurdles with a 15.54.  In the 800m competition, Steve “Sunshine” Corsello led the pack of six Lord Jeff men, finishing in 1:55.82 for eighth place.  Sophomore Melissa Sullivan led the women, finishing third in 2:19.62, with senior Mary Doris “The Ragin’ Cajun” finishing seventh in 2:21.59.  In the women’s 200m dash, senior Caroline Darmody found the will against a prevailing headwind to lower her PR to 30.60 – an improvement on the order of one second.  In the men’s 5000m run, senior Dan Murner finished on an island in first, running a 14:55.19.  Juniors Kevin Hanley and Jack Seaver finished ninth and tenth.  To close the days, both the men and women’s 4x400m relay teams placed top ten: the men’s team of Ryan Drost, Chris Erickson, Tommy Moore, and Andrew Reed narrowly held off Williams for seventh; while Jade McKnight teamed with Melissa Sullivan, Susie Wasserman and Mary Doris Reggie to place ninth.
