5000m Daniel Murner 14th 15:35.34

Race Recap

Daniel Murner qualified provisionally in both the 5k and the 10k, but was only accepted into the 5k field as the 16th and final entrant. Racing at 3:55 with the weather into the 90's and no wind or cloud cover, the conditions were less then ideal for optimal racing and as was expected the opening pace was by all standards slow. The opening mile went through in about 4:54 with all but one of the entire race in a very tight pack. Going through the 2 miles, Daniel was still one of 14 guys within 2 seconds of one another as they went through the 2 mile around 9:41 and then the race started to pick up, and the heat took its toll. Murner stayed in contact with the back of the pack after nailing a 70 second lap but was not able to hold on to that pack - which had already splintered away from the front pack of 8 runners (All-Americans are the Top 8 finishers) and would end up finishing in 14th, well off of his season best time that qualified him for the race. The experience from competing at Nationals, and the preparation for the meet will certainly come in handy next year, as he will look to lay claim to All-American honors next year in his final year of racing.
