Race Recap
Runners of the Meet - Kit Callahan and Christina Wong
The annual running of the Little Three Championships provided the 2nd opportunity to run on the Williams course, and this time in front of a large gathering of family and friends. The rain held off but the wind proved to be a worthy competitor, as did to no surprise the Williams team. Coming into the race, both teams knew it could be a tight battle but when all was said and done, the tight battle never seemed to happen as the Ephs dominated both races and certainly showing why they are the top ranked team in the region at this time. Through the first 3 miles, despite the slower pace, the men were locked in a very tight team battle but when the pace picked up through the last 2 miles, the race was broken wide open. The women got out well but the depth of the Williams squad proved to be more then we could handle but the team could take comfort with a very solid individual win by Elise Tropiano as she ran off the shoulder of the leader until reaching the field before heading back into the woods before moving to a decisive win. Perhaps it was the maintenance of the heavy training volume, possibly looking a little to far ahead in the season that we were not able to be as focused as we could have been, or maybe it was just simply not our day, but both teams will look to rebound at the conference meet next weekend at Bates. Behind Elise's first place run, Zandra Walton would finish 2nd for the team in 15th place with Nicole Anderson in 17th, Hallie Schwab, who continues to return to form from her injury early in the summer, finishing 18th and then Sophie Galleher in 21st. Christina Wong had a very strong race to finish in the Top 25 and 6th for the team, while Laura Zaccagnino rounded out the varsity seven on the day.
The men, who had defeated a Kosgey less Williams squad 2 weeks ago, did not fare quite the same as at Open NE's as they had trouble matching the 2nd half of the race pickup that Williams demonstrated. Will Yochum finished 3rd overall to lead the team, with Eric Holaday, Harrison lakehomer and Daniel Murner finishing within 5 seconds of each other in 9th, 11th and 12th. Jimmy Swanson got stuck in no mans land for a bit but battled back to move in the top 14 with carlyle Eubank and John McGrail rounding out the varsity seven. While hoping to post a Little Three victory for the first time since 1987, the men had to settle for the runner-up spot as Williams kept their very impressive unbeaten streak alive. Kit Callahan, though more of a track guy, had a very strong showing with a huge finishing kick to have the best race of the day for the team, and Kevin Hanley also had a very strong race, as he ran considerably faster then when we were here a month ago.
