Meet Recap

Athlete of the Meet - Shauneen Garrahan'07 & Steve Stewart'09

While only bringing a limited squad, the teams kicked off their 2006-07 Track season at The Husky Classic, run at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston. A few of the athletes carried their fitness from the XC season, while the majority were the sprinters who were using this meet as a test of their fitness and seeing where they were at after training for the past few weeks getting strong. Shauneen Garrahan and Kim Partee went 1-2 in the 5000, with both hitting NCAA provisional marks, as they ran 17:24 and 17:29 respectively, while Heather Wilson finished 4th with a time of 18:08. Maria Millard grabbed a 3rd place finish in the 800, as she raced aggressively from the gun and sped to a time of 2:22.77 while in the same heat, Carly levenson would grab 11th with a nice, opening season time of 2:28. The 4x400 team comprised of Maria, Carly, Jenny Mancino and Molly Priedeman finished 7th with a time of 4:13.49. Jenny grabbed 21st in the 200, to go along with a 41st in the 55 dash before helping the relay team. Kate Silverman was the first Amherst runner across the line in the 500, as she finished 15th, with Molly coming in just a few steps later in 16th, and first year, Hoiwan Cheung finishing 20th. Other first years, getting their chance to make their college track debuts, were Mary Doris Reggie who would finish 12th in the 1000; Jennifer Rybak who posted the top time in the 55 and also ran the 200; Amanda McGinn who doubled up in the 55 and 200; and Mattie Baker and Caroline Darmody who competed in the 400 placing 16th and 25th.

The men were led by Steve Stewart's 10th place finish in the 800, and he also anchored the 4x400 relay of Keith Pendergrass, Thomas Foote, and Rom Cabeza to a 10th place finish. Rom had a solid day, not to mention a busy one, as he placed first for the team in both the Mile and 1000m, as First year runners Kit Callahan and ben Klein doubled up in those events as well, with Ben winning his section of the mile. Thomas made his track debut, as he joined the track team for the winter, before he will return to the lacrosse team, and looked strong in the 800 as he ran 2:03. Keith, in addition to his strong lead off leg in the relay, also made his college debut in the 500 as he ran a strong race to crack 70 seconds. Geoff Stricsek and Steve Shashy went head to head in the 200 and the 400, with each of them out-dueling the other one time, before then working together in the 4x400 B relay.
