Amherst Track & XC and Community Engagement
While most would think that excelling in the class room and on the track or cross country courses would be more then enough work for the typical person to handle, the members of the Track and XC teams go well beyond that on a regular basis. Believing that giving back to one's community and participating in events and programs that add to their experience at Amherst College, the members of the team do a great deal in the way of community engagement. Whether as individuals, or as part of a collective effort as a team, the student-athletes who participate in the program give a great deal of their time and energy back to the community in a broad array of capacities. As students, athletes, leaders, friends or humanitarians - the members of the team look for personal growth in all facets of life, and do their part to make the Amherst Community and well beyond it, a better place.
During the January Intersession period, the team helps - and will do so again this winter - the Amherst Survival Center make and serve food during the week, and this was another way for our team to give back to the community. This fall, the team participated in the Habitat for Humanity House building project on Stanley Street on Sunday morning, Septemebr 27th. On Sunday October 4th, the XC team joined forces with the men's soccer and lacrosse teams for the 2nd Annual Run for Jaclyn event that took place here at Amherst College. The run took place on our XC course so the team helped to make the event went smoothly by providing course directions and encouragement, and working the finish line and even starting the race. The event was a tremendous success and it was a great opportunity for members of the Amherst Community, and surrounding schools to come together for such a great cause. On October 17th, at 10:30 at the Town Commons in Amherst the team will partake in the ABC Walk to help raise money and awareness for the ABC House in Amherst. The team participated last fall, and looks forward to helping support the ABC house again this fall.
The school has made a tremendous commitment to Community Engagement, and you can find out more about what is going on, and ways in which you can become involved by going to the Center for Community Engagement Center In addition to the CCE, the Amherst College's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) takes on events and activities that help to benefit others and you can find more information on the SAAC's commitment to Community Outreach at the Community Link on their web site.
