2008 NE Season Preview

NOTE - The preview is based upon information provided by the coaches of the respective teams and not on the rankings administrator and will be updated towards the end of the summer.

(Based on the order of finish from 2007 Regionals with graduation losses and their respective place at Regionals for the Top 10 teams)

Amherst – (Reichert 17th, Harbus 97th)
While the men will lose the services of their 3rd and 7th runners from their 12th Place NCAA and District Championship Team in Florian Reichert and Mike Harbus, they could come back even stronger as the rest of the team last year were either freshmen or sophomores. Will Yochum, Daniel Murner, Carlyle Eubank, Eric Holaday and Ben Mears should all be stronger this year. The team will also welcome back a healthy Harrison Lakehomer - out for last year with an Achilles injury but was the top runner on the 2006 team - and then several runners saw big improvements on the track and should have a huge impact including NCAA Qualifiers Pete Harrison and Jimmy Swanson, along with steeplechasers Peter Foote and John McGrail.

Williams – (Levin 14th, Burgess 39th, Seybert 70th)
No report submitted, but return 4 of their Top 7 from NCAA 10th place team including Kosgei (Regional Champ), Corey Watts, Brendan Christian and Conor Kamm. In addition, they had incredible depth behind their scoring runners all season and bring in a very talented first year class to go along  with their depth.

Tufts – (Sorenson 11th, Kantos 16th)
Led by captains Dave Tilton and Nick Welch, Tufts returns five of last years top-7 runners who shocked the field to place third at Regionals and earn a ticket to NCAAs in Northfield, Minnesota. Among these returnees is rising junior Jesse Faller, who stormed his way to All-NESCAC, All-Region, and All-American honors in three consecutive races. Other returning varsity contenders will be juniors Ryan Lena and Billy Hale and sophomores Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot, Chris Brunnquell, Andrew Bellet, and Jeff Ragazzini, all coming off excellent outdoor track campaigns at 800, 1500, steeplechase, 5000, and 10000 meters. Sophomore Greg Pallotta is the youngest returner from the last year's top-5 and looks to contribute in championship meets once again after missing the outdoor track season due to foot injuries. With strong returning leaders, a very experienced pack, and a more than promising incoming class of new freshmen, the Tufts Jumbos are set to take to the course as a dominant squad once again

Trinity – (Anderson 27th)
Return 6 of 7 runners from a team that was ranked at one point last year in the Top 10 and have 2 of the top runners in the region returning in Hunter Norte and Sam Moorehead. We should be looking to battle for the New England Championship with 7 other good teams. Picked  up 6 freshman, notables are Mike Burnstein and Dan Scully.

Bowdoin – (Krah 4th, Hall 19th, Lonsdale 58th, Akiha 69th)
No report submitted but graduation losses would be significant

MIT – (Roy-Mayhew 18th, Jacohes 68th)
Cross country should be pretty good for us.  We lost our top finisher at regionals,  Joe Roy-Mayhew, but still have Jake Ruzevick (20th), Yermie Cohen (48th), Trevor Rundell (34th), Hemu Arumugam (43rd), Chris Wong, Gihan Amarasiriwardena, Paul Welle and Richard Prevost.  We have a decent group of freshmen who are strong milers but unproven in cross country, led by Dmitry Kislyuk from California.

Southern Maine – (Wheeler 7th, Wheeler 24th, Hopkins 25th, Tobie 88th)
Simply put; the USM huskies were hit hard by graduation! You certainly don't replace these gent's but we still have a strong nucleaus back along with a talented freshmen class.  2nd yr. runner Tyler Jasud (25:48 @ Regionals; 49th) & 3rd yr. runner Nick Downing (26:20 @ Regionals; 80th) will make a strong 1-2 punch and then we will get some strong help back from the injured list; So. Justin Richardson who was 4th man for us in 06' is back from a knee injury and looked strong in outdoors; 15:35 5k.  Jr. Will Fulford battled injuries last year and could also provide more depth.  Transfer JJ Forcella from UMO who was 3rd in the ME State Class "B" CC Champ's in 05' will certainly add depth to our top 5.  Other upperclassmen who improved a great deal last year on the CC course & track that will provide depth to our team and have the opportunity to make an impact are Jon Letendre, Jonathan Fulford, Sam Bennett, Dan Pontbriand, Doug Mercer, Riley Ploch, Jimmy Sawyer & Corey Gobbi.  With the addition of 14 talented freshmen where some of these young men have run high 15:00's - mid 16:00's for 5k depending on the course, will certainly give the 08' Huskies CC team the depth and talent to hopefully make another run at being a top 7 team in New England.

Keene – (No Graduation losses)
They return their entire team from last year, and much improved through the track season including All-American Craig MacPherson (lost a shoe at regionals and did not finish). Jr.Samuel 25:11 14:55, Sr. Gavaghan 25:40  14:54, So. Macknight 25:44 15:25  31:37, Jr. Wood 25:50  15:47  32 40, Jr. Davis  25:55  No Track, So. Trethewey 25:57   4:17  15:17, Sr. Garrity 25:47 before contracting lyme disease, no track, So. Schillemat 26:33  15:35, So.Pipp 26:38  15:19 32:08, So.Loonan 26:36, 4:28, 16:03. Recruits for Keene- Ben Coutu Manchester Memorial 4:23/9:38, Kevin Hoyt Newton Ct. 4:34/ 9:41, Tom Brogan Pawling NY 2:00/4:34/9:55…. plus 8-10 others

Brandeis – (Condon 44th)
While it looks to be a very strong region this year, I think we have the potential to be in the hunt for a nationals spot. We should be led by two sophomores who ran well at the NE level during their freshman campaigns. Mekonen Gendebo was 2nd freshman at the 2007 regional meet (21st overall), while Paul Norton was 2nd at the NE DIII Indoor 3000m in 8.41 (he also ran 15.08 indoors for 5000m). Seniors Matt Jennnings (3.55 1500m runner, 50th at regionals in 2007) and 4.17 miler Mike Stone (64th at regionals) should improve significantly and give us a strong front group. A number of talented sophomores should all make big jumps after showing potential during their freshman year and give us some depth. Dan Anastos (8.46 indoors) and Zack Schwartz (8.58 indoors) both ran well on the track, while Kerwin Vega and Sam Donovan were both in the 26.30 range over 8k as freshman. All should develop after a year of experience and training. Chris Brown and Marc Boutin are the pick of the freshman class, and both could contribute. Brown was runner-up at the Mass State Indoor Mile (4.19), while Boutin ran 16.07 at the Franklin Park 5k course.

Bates – (Dunlap 15th, Little 46th, Percy 76th)
No report submitted but lose 3 of their Top 5 runners although they return All New England Selection Doug Brecher.

Conn College
Connecticut College will be looking to improve on their 11th place finish at the New England Division III regional in 2007. Leading the team this fall will be senior Brian Murtagh (63rd at 2007 regional) who hopes to regain the form he showed as a freshman in Outdoors when he won both the NESCAC and New England Division III titles in the steeplechase, and as a sophomore when in Cross Country he placed 2nd at the NESCAC Championships and 13th at the New England Division III Championships, and in Indoor Track when he won the 3,000 (8:39) at the New England Division III Championships. Expected to join Murtagh at the front of the Camel pack is sophomore Shawn Mulcahy (65th at 2007 regional) who during the spring Track season finished second in the 5,000 at the NESCAC Championship and who won the 10,000 meter event (31:27) at the New England Division III Championship. Also having potential to score for CONN this fall are sophomores Jacob Garber, Andrew Patton, Brett Herrick, Charles Michel, and transfer Nate Lovitt (CCSU).

Middlebury
As for my team, I had one lone senior graduate - Jimmy Butcher - and return the rest of the team.  Recruits are average except for one Kenyan who supposedly runs in the high 14's for 5K's but we will see.

Wesleyan

We should be improved over last year since we return everyone but regional runner up Sean Watson. We don't have a great deal of depth but we do return Jonah Blumstein (53rd at regionals) 15:10 5k/ 31:42 10k, Sam Kurtis (83rd at Regionals) 15:31 5k/ 32:42 10k, Charlie Lang (107th at regionals) 15:45 5k, Tom Akita (82nd at regionals) 15:58 5k/ 33:11 10k, Chris Foster (109th at regionals) 1:55 800m/3:59 1500m. We have 3 solid freshman who could add some depth.

Gordon
Gordon men finished 22nd last year, the highest in school history.  We expect to be stronger this year and hope to crack the top 20 for the first time ever.  We also hope to compete for the Commonwealth Coast Conference title where we were 2nd last year.  We return our numbers 1-4, 6 and 8-10 including SO Dan Gaunya (141st   27:28 but improved to 33:13 on track), JR Ben McGrath (147, 27:34), SO Andrew Worth (157 27:48 but improved to 16:29/34:50 on track), SR Mat Schetne (161 27:53 but improved to 15:47/33:19 on track) and SR JD Lavallee (197 28:32).  We also return from a year off from school JR Kirk Vanacore (198 in ’06 plus 16:40/35:50 on track).  We bring in 13 new freshmen including Niall McMahon (Essex Junction VT, 16:44 5K XC/9:15 3000), Marty Maloney (Eastview MN, 16:40 5K XC/10:00 3200/4:34 1600), Alex Higley (Abington Heights PA, 17:00 5K XC) and Aaron Noga (Goffstown NH, 17:55 5K XC)
