Present Company Inc.
Present Company, Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to creating and presenting provocative and topical performance works. These works are often developed collaboratively by artists from theater, dance, video, music, and the visual arts. Founded in 1980 in Washington D.C. by artistic director Wendy Woodson and now based in Amherst, MA. Present Company has, in the 31 years of its history, gained a national reputation for innovative and exciting interdisciplinary perfotmance of outstanding quality.
The Company's full-length movement/ theater works (including Roomers, Force of Habit, Landfall, A Disappearance, Visiting Hours, Miranda, and She Turned On the Light) have been produced by some of the major presenters of new work in the U.S. including District Curators, Jacob's Pillow, the John F. Kennedy Center, P.S. 122, the Dance Place, Washington Project for the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, Wolf Trap, the Yard, the National Performance Network, BACA, La Mama NY, and numerous colleges and universities. Video works have won many prizes and been exhibited at such venues as the DeCordova Museum, RISDI, New England Film and Video Festival, U.S. Super 8 Film and Video Festival, Rhode Island International Film and Video Festival, Chicago Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Northampton Film Festivaland and on German public television.
The Company has received grants from among others, the National Endowment of the Arts, the D.C. Commission of the Arts, the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Consortium. Present Comany, Inc. has consistently brought together artists of the highest professional caliber in their respective fields. Director/choreographer/videographer Wendy Woodson, theater director Achim Nowak, installation artist Nade Haley, set and costume designers Suzanna Dougan and Kathy Couch, filmmaker Dan Keller, composers Bob Read, Kit Watkins, Stephen Katz, and Janna Goodwin, photographer Eric Poggenpohl and performance artists Court Dorset, Jim Brown, Peter Schmitz, Roberta Levine, Susan Thompson, Amie Dowling, B.J. Goodwin are but some of the artists who have contributed to the Company's body of work. With its emphasis on collaboration and dialogue between different media and artists, Present Company plays an important role in the national vanguard of contemporary interdisciplinary performance.
