AMHERST, MA - Amherst College junior point guard Andrew Olson (San Diego, CA) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s basketball Player of the Week this afternoon after guiding the Lord Jeffs to a comeback victory in Saturday’s conference quarterfinal contest against eighth-seeded Bates College. Olson’s performance in the second half helped the top-seeded Jeffs erase a six-point halftime deficit against the upset-minded Bobcats.

Tight full-court pressure throughout the entire first stanza held Olson scoreless on only three shot attempts, but he still managed to contribute with four assists and one steal. Olson returned from the locker room in usual form, connecting on four of seven field goals, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Two of Olson’s trifectas came from close to 25 feet, the first extending the lead to seven with 8:34 to play, and the second serving as the dagger, giving the Jeffs a six point cushion with just under two minutes remaining. Olson also cashed in at the charity stripe, making six of his seven attempts to help seal the victory.

Finishing with 17 points, eight assists and a steal, Olson joins sophomore forward Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) and junior forward Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, MI) as this year’s Amherst recipients of Player of the Week honors. This marks the second Player of the Week award for Olson, who received the distinction last season for his MVP performance in the Pioneer Valley Classic.

Olson recorded his 180th assist of the season in the quarterfinal game, which sets a new Amherst single-season record. The previous mark of 179 was set by Olson last season.

Amherst returns to NESCAC tournament action this Saturday for a semifinals date with Colby College at 2:00 in LeFrak Gymnasium.
