January 13, 2001
AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's ice hockey team routed an overwhelmed and winless Massachusetts Institute of Technology club 9-0 on Saturday, as the Jeffs outshot the 0-9 Engineers 57-7 and sophomore goaltender Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) notched her first career shutout.

Alexander spent the bulk of the afternoon watching the action from afar as the puck seldom ventured outside the M.I.T. zone. First-year forward Tory Serues' (Cambridge, MA) one-timer from classmate Katie Potter (Ridgewood, NY) 2:33 into the game turned out to be the game-winner, as the Jeffs poured it on with four goals in the first period and five in the second, improving to 3-7 on the season.
Serues and fellow first-year forward Bess Kargman (Brookline, MA) each scored twice for Amherst, while junior Courtney Wieland (Norwich, VT) and rookie defender Pam Burkardt (Pittsburgh, PA) both finished with a goal and three assists. Meanwhile, junior Co-captain Hilary Zwerdling (Shrewsbury, MA), sophomore Danielle Williams (Needham, MA) and newcomer Elissa Landes (Potomac, MD) also pierced the scoring column with a goal each, to go along with three assists by first-year forward Alison White (Brookline, MA) and one from Amanda Muller (Princeton, NJ).
M.I.T.'s only true scoring opportunity came 9:14 into the third period when sophomore forward Erin Mellancamp (Haddonfield, NJ) sent a blind crossing-pass to freshman Audrey Roy (West Hills, CA) for an attempted one-timer. Alexander turned that shot away easily, however, and finished with seven saves on the afternoon in what was an otherwise leisurely day at the rink.
M.I.T. has now been outscored 90-0 and is yet to score a goal this season. The Jeffs have won three of their last five, returning to action Tuesday at Connecticut College at 7 p.m.
