AMHERST, MA - After holding a powerful Huskie attack at bay for 56 minutes, the Amherst College women's ice hockey team fell victim to a pair of late third period goals in a 2-0 loss to the University of Southern Maine Friday night at Orr Rink.

Amherst sophomore goaltender Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) strung together an endless array of spectacular saves, finishing with 47 overall, as Southern Maine outshot the Jeffs 36-4 over the first two periods. Ironically, just when Amherst found its way into Huskie territory with 10 shots on goal in the third period, including several legitimate scoring opportunities, Southern Maine turned the table on the Jeffs and scored twice in a 1:30 span late in the game to seal the victory.

Senior defender Breanne Fortiguerra (Lyman, ME) scored the game-winner with 3:17 left in regulation on a right-handed slapshot into the top left corner over the top of a stunned Alexander who was screened on the play. Just 1:29 later, junior forward Beth Fulton (Exeter, NH) fed sophomore Stacey Rudnicki (Glenburn, ME) for a one-timer right in front of the net to set the final score at 2-0 for the Huskies.

Amherst nearly broke through and took the lead earlier in the third period on its only power play opportunity of the evening after Southern Maine forward Heather Hill was called for roughing at the 7:24 mark. Sophomore forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA), the Jeffs' leading scorer on the season with 19 points, was notably active with a couple of near misses, but the Jeffs couldn't penetrate the shutout effort put forth by Huskie senior goaltender Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec), who finished with 14 saves.

With the win, Southern Maine improved to 7-3-1 on the season, while Amherst fell to 2-7 overall. The Jeffs return to Orr Rink tomorrow (Saturday) against visiting M.I.T. at 3 p.m.
