Sarah Bergman Named NESCAC Player of the Week
February 5 - First-year Amherst College forward Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Jeffs to a pair of wins over New England and Trinity Colleges last weekend. Full Story

February 3 - First-year Amherst College forward Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) and junior Co-captain Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY) each turned in career days on the offensive end, as the host Jeffs trumped visiting Trinity College, 74-58, in a NESCAC women's basketball pairing on Saturday afternoon. 11 Players Score as Jeffs Crush New England College, 66-44
February 2 - A season-high 11 different players scored for the Amherst College women's basketball team on Friday night, as the Jeffs cruised to their 16th victory of the season with a 66-44 win over the visiting New England College Pilgrims in a non-conference match-up. The Jeffs, who improve to 16-3, were paced by first-year Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT), who shot a torrid 9-11 from the field en route to a 20-point night. Full Story

January 27 - Sophomore Amherst College forward Sarah Walker (W. Hartford, CT) turned in a 10-point, 18-rebound, five-block performance on Saturday afternoon to help the host Jeffs upend the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in a 61-51 NESCAC women's basketball final. Second-Half Run Lifts W-Hoops Over Bates, 58-46
January 26 - The Amherst College women's basketball team broke open its Friday night NESCAC showdown against visiting Bates College with an 18-0 run midway through the second half, holding on for a 58-46 victory over the Bobcats. Sophomore Amherst point guard Sara Bozorg (Amherst, MA) had a game-high 14 points to lead the Jeffs, along with a stellar 10-point, 15-rebound night from classmate Sarah Walker (W. Hartford, CT). Another Day, Another Late Rally as Jeffs Down Middlebury in OT
January 20 - The afternoon after an emotionally-charged, last-second loss to Williams College, it stood to reason that, playing 150 miles away at NESCAC-rival Middlebury College, the Amherst women's basketball team would run out of steam sometime around the midway point of the second half. Instead, it took that long for the Jeffs to wake up, but wake up they did, rallying in the final minutes for the fourth time in as many games, eventually knocking off the Panthers, 55-49, in their second overtime game of the last week. Stumpo Spoils Late Amherst Heroics as Williams Wins, 81-79
January 19 - Williams College sophomore Kate Stumpo (Walpole, MA) hit a driving one-handed lay-in with 1.9 seconds remaining to lift the visiting Ephs to a stunning 81-79 victory over host Amherst College on Friday night. First-year Amherst guard Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) had hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final 18.1 seconds, tying the game at 79 with 5.6 ticks remaining. Senior Williams guard Liz Tilley (Queens, NY) led all scorers with 26 points, while rookie Amherst forward Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) had a career-high 22 points for the Jeffs before fouling out with 5:11 remaining. Basketball Teams Ready for Rematches as Williams Comes to Town
January 18 - Thanks to their unprecedented doubleheader sweep of arch-rival Williams College last Saturday in Williamstown, the Amherst College men's and women's basketball teams will have a chance at home on Friday night to accomplish something done only once before in school history-a four-game season sweep of the Ephs. Judging by last Saturday's contests, however, both teams will have their work cut out for them if the Jeffs are to accomplish such a feat for the first time since the 1982-83 season. Full Story

January 16 - Senior Amherst College Co-captain Charlotte Taylor (Harvard, MA) hit a driving left-handed lay-up with 1:46 remaining to give the host Jeffs the lead for good, as Amherst held on for a hard-fought 62-59 victory over visiting Wesleyan University on Tuesday night. First-year guard Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) led all scorers with 23 points, as Amherst snapped Wesleyan's school-record nine-game win streak in a game that featured 17 lead changes. Full Story

W-Basketball Wins 68-63 Overtime Thriller at Arch-Rival Williams
January 13 - The Amherst College women's basketball team, despite never leading in the second half, hung on for a dramatic 68-63 overtime victory at arch-rival Williams College on Saturday afternoon, connecting on five of six free-throws in the extra frame after rallying from a nine-point deficit at the end of regulation. Hoop Squads Headed for Williamstown for Saturday Doubleheader
January 12 - With the opening night of New England Small College Athletic Conference play one week away, the Amherst College men's and women's basketball teams turn their attention towards their arch-rivals this weekend, with Saturday night's doubleheader at Williams College's Chandler Gymnasium opening a stretch of three consecutive Little III match-ups. January 12 - Amherst College head women's basketball coach and Syracuse, NY, native Billy McBride recorded his 100th career coaching victory with a 77-46 win over visiting Babson College on Thursday night. McBride's Lord Jeffs - who cracked the New England regional rankings at number-nine this week for the first time in two years - moved to 10-2 on the season, matching Amherst's best women's basketball record to start the season in school-history. January 11 - The Amherst College women's basketball team gift-wrapped Head Coach Billy McBride's 100th career win on Thursday night, blowing out the Beavers of Babson College - who entered the game as the top-ranked team in New England - in a 77-46 final at Amherst's LeFrak Gymnasium. Amherst first-year Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) led all scorers with 17, as the Jeffs improved to 10-2 for only the second time in school history. Full Story

January 9 - Senior Amherst College Co-captain Charlotte Taylor (Harvard, MA) connected on her first four field-goal attempts, all three-pointers, en route to a career-high 14 points on Tuesday night, as the Amherst women's basketball team used suffocating defense to cruise past the host Smith College Pioneers, picking up their ninth win with a 50-24 victory. January 6 - Behind 21 points each from first-years Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) and Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA), and a 10-point, 10-rebound performance from senior Co-captain Charlotte Taylor (Harvard, MA), her first career double-double, the women's basketball team cruised past Framingham State College on Saturday afternoon, exploding for their highest offensive output of the season in the 80-63 win. January 3 - Despite separate 12-0 and 7-0 runs in the second half of Wednesday night's Holiday Inn Naismith Classic championship game, the Amherst College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit to host Springfield College, dropping a 53-50 nailbiter in a thrilling contest between two of New England's top teams. January 2 - Amherst College first-year Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) posted a game and career-best 18 points, including two huge buckets down the stretch, as the Jeffs opened 2001 in winning fashion, holding off a late run from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Red Hawks in the opening round of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic, earning a 53-50 win at Springfield College on Tuesday. December 7 - Senior Wellesley Co-captain Amy Barao (Norwell, MA) scored a game-high 18 points, surpassing the 1,000-point plateau for her career and leading the host Blue to a 57-40 victory over visiting Amherst College in a New England Division III non-conference showdown on Thursday night. December 5 - Junior Co-captain Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY) scored eight consecutive points to begin a game-breaking 28-6 first-half run for the visiting Amherst College womenÕs basketball team, who shot its way to a 68-37 thrashing of host Western New England College (WNEC) in non-conference action on Tuesday night, their fourth-consecutive win to open the season.
