Jeffs Hold off Keene State in 62-60 Thriller
November 29, 2000

KEENE, NH - Amherst College first-year Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) scored a game-high 19 points, including a key three-pointer with 3:27 left, to lead the visiting Jeffs to a nailbiting 62-60 victory at Keene State College on Wednesday night.

One night after the Jeffs opened the season with a dominating performance on the boards, foul trouble forced the visitors to resort to the outside game, with forwards Sarah Bergman (Shaftsbury, VT) and Sarah Walker (W. Hartford, CT) forced to sit the last 13:16 of the first half. Behind Russell and sophomore point guard Sara Bozorg (Amherst, MA), the Jeffs' perimeter game came through.

Russell, who netted 14 points in the Jeffs' 63-49 win over Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday, connected for a pair of long-distance bombs in the opening half, and Bozorg connected on four of nine shots in the opening period, including one three-pointer, as Amherst opened up a 10-point halftime lead.

After halftime, the Owls rallied, led by junior guard Sarah Linn (Brattleboro, VT). After a 11-1 Keene State run brought the Owls even at 39, the two teams battled back and forth, with ties again at 42 and 44, before a three-point play from Russell gave the Jeffs a 48-44 with 10:45 to play.

The Owls would eventually tie the game at 53 with 3:42 remaining, but Russell's fourth three-pointer of the night gave the Jeffs a lead that they would not relinquish, despite a late three-pointer from Keene sophomore Julie Tardif (Atkinson, NH) to cut the final Amherst margin to two.

With Bergman and Walker saddled with foul trouble throughout the game, the Jeffs received a stellar performance from first-year center Caitlin Farrell (Lafayette, CA), who came off the bench to provide 10 points and 13 rebounds in only 22 minutes of action. Bozorg finished with seven rebounds, six assists and four steals to go along with her 15 points, and Amherst Co-captain Charlotte Taylor (Harvard, MA) added seven points and three rebounds for the Jeffs, who improve to 2-0 with the win.

Keene State, which was paced by 14 points and nine rebounds from junior center Margot Fleming (Delhi, NY), falls to 5-2 on the season, and is next in action on Saturday at the University of Southern Maine. Amherst returns to action on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
