AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College (15-7) softball team split a non-league doubleheader with visiting Westfield State College (9-13) on Wednesday, winning the first game 4-2 before dropping the nightcap 9-3.

The Jeffs overcame a 2-1 deficit in the opener, as senior shortstop Shari Sakamoto (Pasadena, CA) drove in junior starting pitcher Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, MA) and sophomore designated hitter Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) with a game-winning two-run single in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, Peloquin went the distance, scattering three hits with 10 strikeouts to improve her record to 11-1. She also drove in a run with an RBI single, while first-year first baseman Gina Scribner (Star, ID) went three-for-three with a run scored and an RBI. Westfield State starter Sarah Simmons (Salem, MA) took the loss to fall to 3-5.

In the nightcap, Westfield State first-year hurler Christina D'Ambrosio (White Horse Beach, MA) notched a complete game victory in her first start of the season to improve to 3-0. The Owls jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage against Melia, who drew the game-two start for Amherst and fell to 4-6 with the loss. They also added three runs in the sixth against Peloquin, before Amherst retaliated with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to set the final score at 9-3.

Sophomore catcher Tasha Goulet (Worcester, MA) paced the Owl attack with a double, two singles, a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore shortstop Nicole Kenney (Woburn, MA) also finished with three hits and two runs scored, while senior third baseman Jill Easttey (Rockland, MA), senior first baseman Kelly Walsh (East Setauket, NY), and first-year right fielder B.J. Dion (Waltham, MA) added two hits each. Meanwhile, sophomore center fielder Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) was the only Amherst player to notch two hits off Goulet.

The Jeffs return to action on Saturday for a NESCAC doubleheader at Middlebury College starting at 1 p.m.
