M-Lax Holds Off Bates, 8-5|
LEWISTON, Maine - The Amherst College men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held off a late Bates College rally to down the host Bobcats 8-5 and improve to 3-0 on the season with a win in its NESCAC season-opener.
Amherst stymied the Bobcats in the first half, taking a 3-0 lead after the opening period on a pair of goals by senior Eric Edelson (Bethesda, MA), and extending its seemingly insurmountable advantage to 5-0 by haltfime. Senior goalkeeper Corey Simonson (Brookline, MA) stopped all nine Bates shots on goal in the first two quarters.
Bates (3-3, 0-2 NESCAC) finally broke through at the 8:52 mark in the second half, when junior Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, MA) converted on a three-man advantage. The Bobcats scored another extra-man goal just over two minutes later, and then trimmed the lead to 5-3 on a diving goal by sophomore Jeff Critchlow (Carlisle, MA) with 31 seconds left in the third. Amherst answered just under two minutes into the fourth period on a goal by sophomore Tucker Sowers (Ridgewood, NJ), but Bates cut the lead to two again 30 seconds later on Gaughan's second tally of the contest on a feed from junior Matt Winterle (Duxbury, MA). Bates had a chance to pick up a major momentum change when sophomore goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made a point-blank save and sent the ball the other way, but the Bobcats could not convert on the other end as Simonson made a couple of equally impressive saves. Bates was unable to get any closer than two goals after that.
Bates' Gaughan and Critchlow and Amherst's Edelson and Chris Condlin (Baltimore, MD) each had two goals in the contest. Bobcat junior Dave Frederick (West Hartford, CT) added two assists. Dobbyn made 13 saves in the loss, while Simonson picked up the win with 19 stops.
Amherst and undefeated first-year head coach Tom Carmean return to action Tuesday at non-league foe Western New England College at 4 p.m.
