GORHAM, ME - Junior Amherst forward Greg Carr (Hanover, MA) scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the visiting Amherst College men's hockey team to a 6-0 win at the University of Southern Maine Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.
The Jeffs improved to 12-3-3 overall and 8-2-3 in the ECAC, while Southern Maine fell to 5-15-1 (2-11 ECAC) with the loss.
Junior forward Dave Moore (Randolph, MA) notched what proved to be the game-winner for the Jeffs 6:37 into the first period, assisted by first-year defensemen Josh Hoffman (Ambler, PA) and John McNicholas (Lake Forest, IL). Fellow junior Bob Miele (Woburn, MA) also connected in the first on a on a 3-on-2 break 2:13 before the first intermission.
After a scoreless second stanza, McNicholas opened a four-goal third period for the Jeffs with an unassisted tally at the 4:44 mark. Carr then netted consecutive scoring strikes, followed by a team-leading 11th goal of the season from senior Jim Smith (Rochester, MN), to set the final score at 6-0.
Amherst senior goaltender Nick Rieser (Northfield, IL) turned away 13 shots for his first shutout of the season. His counterpart, junior Jason Tucker (Bangor, ME) posted 21 saves in defeat.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for a non-conference matchup at Middlebury College.
