WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Amherst College men's hockey team used three power play goals, including a pair in the final period, to overpower host Babson College, 6-2, in ECAC men's ice hockey action on Friday night. The Jeffs improve to 8-3-2 overall (4-3-2 ECAC/NESCAC), while the Beavers slip to 8-5-3 overall (3-4-2 ECAC/East).

Amherst took a 1-0 lead early in the opening period when senior Tri-captain Gregg DiNardo (North Reading, MA), knocked in a rebound of the Jeffs' first shot of the game at the 3:35-mark. First-year Josh Hoffman (Ambler, PA) then made it 2-0 with his second goal of the season at 18:10, before Babson first-year Eric Tkacz (Enfield, CT) scored with just seven seconds left in the period to cut the Beavers' deficit to one.

In an evenly-played second period, Amherst once again increased its lead to two goals when junior Dave Moore (Randolph, MA) slid a nifty backhanded shot past Babson goaltender Greg Berard (Woonsocket, RI) at 6:26. Things would stay that way until the opening seconds of the third period, when DiNardo scored his second of the night on the power-play, giving the Jeffs a 4-1 advantage.

Babson finally built some momentum four minutes into the third, when sophomore Kyle Fruetel (Nashua, NH) gathered a pass from senior Eric Bookbinder (Buffalo, NY) at the blue line and ripped a shot past senior Amherst goalie Nick Rieser (Northfield, IL). However, that would be as close as the Beavers would get, as five third-period penalties led to two more Amherst goals. Junior Bob Miele (Woburn, MA) stuffed a loose puck into an open net at 9:32, and senior Tri-captain Darce Swaggert (Wayzata, MN) scored on a slap-shot at 17:51 to finish off the 6-2 rout.

Rieser was solid all night for the Jeffs, stopping 17 of the 19 shots he faced en route to the win. Berard finished with 22 saves in goal for Babson. The Jeffs stay over in the Boston area Friday night, skating at the University of Massachusetts-Boston in a Saturday afternoon tilt before returning to Amherst. Babson is home again on Saturday, hosting Trinity College-3-0 victors over UMass-Boston on Friday-in a 4:00 p.m. start.
