Junior Alicia Menezes teamed with first-year Brittany Benckes to win the Wilson/ITA Regional doubles title.

Menezes and Berckes Take Wilson/ITA Crown

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Amherst women's tennis team started off its fall season on a high note, with the number one doubles team nabbing a prestigious title at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The duo of junior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) and first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) won the Wilson/ITA Regional doubles title in impressive style.

Only one opponent took more than five games off the Amherst pairing, in a bracket which featured pro-style eight-game sets each round. The semifinal match proved to be the most difficult round for the Jeffs, which saw them win 9-7 over a team from Bowdoin College.

Menezes and Berckes also had to advance through teams from Little Three rival Williams College in the first round, host MIT in the second round, Wesleyan University in the semifinal and Middlebury College in the final.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at Middlebury.
